What Do YA Readers Want? – Data

22 teens responded to the question: What kinds of published books would you like to see more of? on the TCWT blog chain, while 40 respondents of an unidentified age responded to the question: What would you like to see more or less of in YA? on the Absolute Write Watercooler forums. This is the data.

The responses are organized and tallied as close as possible into pertinent categories with relevant subheadings. If a response has two numbers, the first is from the teen respondent group. If it has only one number, it could be from either group. If it has no number then it is either just a heading that no one specifically requested, or only one person requested it. Though I put things in my words for clarity, sometimes I used the respondents exact words. You should be able to tell!

  2. Oh hey, this post is neat! I just now found it but I think I almost like it more than the analyze-y post because this one is all numbers and things. Who asked for “honest-to-god lesbians”? xD *BIG thumbs up*

    • I thought some of you might like the actual data! I loved that statement “honest-to-God lesbians” so I had to include it! 🙂 As if to say, current YA lit has only psuedo-lesbians or at least a poor portrayal of women/girls who are lesbians. I think it said volumes in one snarky comment. 🙂 Unfortunately I can’t recall exactly who said that, but it was definitely someone on the Absolute Write forum. And thanks for your thumbs up. Appreciation is always welcome!

      • Ahaha, that makes sense! I couldn’t remember reading that in any TCWT, and I read them pretty thoroughly that month because I was so interested in the topic.

        Yeah… there’s actually a TV show called, can you believe it, “Faking It” about this girl who pretends to be a lesbian because she thinks it will make her popular. *does death-stare in the direction of “Faking It”* First of all, people usually give you a lot of crap for not being straight aaaaaand I don’t WANT fake lesbians. We don’t NEED fake lesbians in media. All that does is make it harder for actually-queer people to come out because then people say, “Oh, you’re just doing that for attention.”

      • The thing about faking it is not just about fake lesbians its also about how one them faking it realizes she really is lesbian & it also has real gays, so while it may not be a very interesting show it doesn’t just put off that being lesbian is cool it has a mmixture just like in real life. No offense or anything.
