Act of Resistance 8-1-2018

You’ll find today’s letters at the bottom of the post. They’re somewhat short, highlighting some big issues right now. Feel free to use them to write your own letters or call your reps! The I Called My Reps website is on hiatus until September 1st, but @celeste_pewter still posts scripts and information on her Twitter account so head over there for help. And while you’re at it, she’s a great Resistance account to follow!

I’m also putting together a plan for contacting Democratic voters that I know to encourage them to vote in both the primary (MI, August 7th) and the Midterms (November 6th). It will involve information you can use to send your own encouragement and a giveaway as a little incentive. More on that in the coming days!

Until then, keep resisting in whatever way you can. Even small acts add up over the long haul. And this will be a long two years!

Dear Senator Stabenow,

Please speak out against Trump’s tweet on August 1st asking AG Sessions to end the Mueller probe. This is an obvious escalation on his attacks on the Mueller probe, and as many lawmakers have already stated: an attempt to obstruct justice in plain sight. The Mueller investigation has already resulted in 35 indictments, 5 guilty pleas, and an ongoing trial. This is not a “rigged witch hunt”. I also ask that you support legislation that protects Mueller in both chambers. This includes the Senate’s Special Counsel Independence and Integrity Act, which passed Senate Judiciary in May. The GOP leadership keeps saying that legislation isn’t needed, but Trump’s escalation in attacks clearly proves this isn’t the case. Please act now.

I ask you to support Bill Nelson’s S. 3304 which will amend Chapter 44 of Title 18, US Code, to prohibit the publication of 3D printer plans for the printing of firearms. The posting of this information could enable individuals who would normally be unable to pass a background check to have the ability to print firearms at home. While the cost of printing those firearms can prevent some from access, it won’t prevent all. This could ultimately hamper our ability to have effective gun control in the United States. The easy access to printing could also potentially create situations of gun violence.

I ask that you support the bipartisan S. 2593: Secure Elections Act and S. 3090: Save Voters Act. With November Midterms right around the corner it’s important that Congress ensure that our elections are protected and transparent. I also ask that you vote NO on Donald L. Palmer’s nomination to the Election Assistance Commission. His past track record of purging voters and misinforming voters of their status in Virginia proves he cannot effectively perform or support the mission of the Commission. I also ask that you do everything in your power to guard against Russia’s interference in future elections.

I am very concerned about reports of abuse happening to migrant children separated from their families in US custody. I want the perpetrators to face justice, I want any sort of abuse to stop immediately, and I want those 711 children still in US custody to be reunited with their families. The entire immigration system starting with abolishing ICE needs to be completely revamped. It was already broken and now Trump is making it far worse.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Austin

And lastly, I can’t wait to see who wins the Democratic Primary to run against you in November. I look forward to voting for and campaigning for either Jerry Hilliard or Zigmond Kozicki. I know it’s a long shot, but I would dearly love to see you voted out of office.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Austin
